Is the success of mobile games due to portability, or is it thanks to touch controls?

In this blog post, we’ll examine the factors behind the explosive growth of mobile games from the perspectives of portability, accessibility, changes in the development environment, and touch-based controls.

It has long been a common sight to see people of all ages and genders playing games on their phones wherever they go. As smartphones began to emerge, the popularity of mobile games also skyrocketed. Mobile games have become so mainstream that virtually every smartphone user has tried them at least once. Consequently, the mobile gaming market continues to grow steadily. As the adoption of smartphones has accelerated, mobile games have evolved beyond a simple leisure activity to become an indispensable part of everyday culture. People have begun to enjoy games while commuting or during brief moments of free time, and this shift has significantly contributed to the growth of the mobile gaming market.
In fact, mobile games account for the largest share of the overall gaming market—which includes PC and console games—and the reasons for their popularity can be found in several aspects. First, they offer excellent portability. Since computers are difficult to carry around, PC gaming is limited to specific locations. In contrast, because people can carry their smartphones with them at all times, they can enjoy games regardless of location. Furthermore, the nature of mobile gaming—which is virtually free from time and location constraints—aligns well with the busy lifestyles of modern people. The ability to play games even during short intervals, such as commutes or waiting times, is one of the reasons mobile gaming is so widely loved by the public. Furthermore, as high-speed internet access has become commonplace thanks to advances in mobile communication technology, it has become possible to enjoy online games seamlessly even while on the go. Mobile games have evolved beyond simply being games played alone; they have naturally incorporated the characteristics of online games that allow players to connect with others anytime, anywhere.
Second, from a developer’s perspective, the mobile game market is considered a relatively accessible sector to enter. Of course, many recent mobile games also require high-level graphics and technical expertise, but the mobile platform has long provided an environment where developers can enter the market with relatively little capital and manpower. PC and console games have continuously evolved in terms of graphics, physics engines, and content scale, and consumer expectations have also risen. Consequently, it takes significant time and money for latecomer developers to catch up with this technological gap. In contrast, the mobile gaming market allows projects of various scales to coexist, and independent developers or small studios can also find opportunities to succeed based on creative ideas. In fact, the mobile platform has seen success stories not only with large-scale games but also with simple puzzle games and casual games. The ability to enter the market with relatively low investment costs has become one of the key drivers behind the expansion of investment in the mobile gaming industry.
Third, mobile games also have strengths in terms of accessibility. Installing an app on a smartphone is much simpler than installing a game on a computer. This is because users can download games through app stores with just a few taps and start playing immediately. Furthermore, with the emergence of social games that allow interaction with friends, people have gained easier access to game information through their acquaintances. The popularity of these social games demonstrates that games can serve as a medium for connecting people, going beyond mere personal entertainment. The tension and enjoyment that arise from cooperating or competing with friends within the game act as key factors that keep users coming back.
Generally, the reasons for the success of mobile games can be found in the factors examined so far. However, these explanations mostly focus on the market potential and industrial aspects of mobile games. Here, we aim to examine the characteristics of mobile games from a different perspective. In particular, it is worth noting how smartphone control methods have influenced the success of mobile games.
Before PC games became mainstream, most video games relied on game controllers. Players had to perform all actions using only a limited number of buttons. While this was a sufficient method given the technological level at the time, it had limitations in naturally expressing all the movements users desired. Later, as personal computers became widespread, PC games began to evolve, and new input devices—the mouse and keyboard—emerged. These allowed users to navigate the screen more freely and select desired locations. The mouse, in particular, played a crucial role in intuitively controlling the on-screen space. However, users were still limited to indirectly manipulating the screen. People wanted to interact with the game world more directly, and this desire remained unfulfilled.
It was in this context that devices based on touch-sensing technology—most notably smartphones—emerged. Users could now control games by directly touching the screen. Smartphones offer a far more intuitive and immediate form of interaction than traditional input methods. Moving characters with a finger or directly tapping specific objects provides users with a much more natural experience. As users became able to execute complex commands with simple hand gestures, they experienced a much higher level of immersion. This shift signifies an evolution in game controls. Users now have a much stronger sense of directly controlling the game, and this is one of the key reasons for the widespread acceptance of mobile games.
A prime example is the Nintendo DS. Since its initial release in Japan in 2004, the Nintendo DS has enjoyed tremendous success worldwide. While various factors have been cited as reasons for its success, one of them is its touch-based control system, which was highly innovative for its time. At the time, most gaming consoles relied on physical buttons, and devices supporting touch input were extremely rare. However, the Nintendo DS utilized a touchscreen, allowing users to play games by directly touching the screen. This provided an experience that clearly distinguished it from existing gaming consoles. Users could move characters or solve puzzles simply by touching the screen, and this intuitiveness appealed to many consumers as a fresh and appealing feature.
The success of the Nintendo DS had a significant influence on various game consoles and smartphones released afterward. Touch controls became established not merely as a new feature but as a key standard for game interfaces. As touch recognition technology continued to advance, smartphones, tablets, and mobile games have further refined this control method. With the addition of various technologies—such as multi-touch, gesture recognition, and haptic feedback—users have been able to experience more natural and rich interactions. As a result, people can now control games in whatever way they prefer, and this freedom has contributed to further increasing interest in and demand for mobile games.
Every person has a desire to act more freely. We also have a natural inclination to control things according to our own will. Games are a medium that can satisfy these desires relatively easily. The experience of performing desired actions, producing outcomes, and controlling situations within a virtual world provides a sense of satisfaction that is difficult to achieve in reality. If a game can effectively stimulate and fulfill these inner desires, it can be considered a successful game. In this sense, touch controls are a crucial means of reinforcing the user’s sense of direct interaction with the game world. Therefore, the success of mobile games can be seen as deeply linked not only to portability and accessibility but also to the development of touch-based interfaces that satisfy users’ desire for free control.
