Currently, South Korea’s smartphone penetration rate stands at approximately 96% as of 2025, meaning the vast majority of citizens use smartphones. Smartphones have moved beyond being mere communication tools; they have become deeply embedded in our lives and are recognized as essential everyday devices. We live in an era where smartphones allow us to search for information anytime, anywhere, communicate with others, and even handle financial transactions with ease. The widespread adoption of smartphones has significantly transformed our lifestyle, giving rise to a new culture. The ubiquity of smartphones has spurred rapid growth in various industries, including software, mobile communications, and entertainment, profoundly impacting daily life and the economy. However, alongside the positive changes brought by smartphone adoption, negative effects such as cyber addiction, personal information leaks, and social isolation are also increasing, making social attention and countermeasures urgently needed.
Smartphones are commonly defined as mobile phones that offer PC-like functions alongside advanced mobile communication capabilities. By this definition, the Symon is considered the first smartphone. The Symon not only functioned as a mobile phone but also offered an address book, world clock, calculator, notepad, email, fax sending/receiving, and entertainment features. However, examining these features, one might conclude they were not fundamentally different from what we commonly refer to as “feature phones.” Furthermore, while some redefine smartphones as devices capable of controlling the device through the installation and removal of various applications, the truth is that the precise definition of the smartphones we use today remains ambiguous. This is because devices with similar, albeit imperfect, capabilities existed before. The definition of a smartphone has evolved over time alongside technological advancements. Early smartphones were simply regarded as devices integrating multiple functions into one unit, but today’s smartphones are evaluated as compact computers with advanced computing capabilities. This evolution signifies that smartphones have developed beyond mere communication tools into devices capable of comprehensively managing an individual’s life. Consequently, many experts define smartphones as devices capable of functions beyond mobile telephony, thereby distinguishing them.
The mass adoption of smartphones began in earnest in the mid-2000s, starting with RIM’s BlackBerry phone. In South Korea, interest and usage surged dramatically starting with Apple’s iPhone in late 2009, rapidly expanding the smartphone market. During this process, consumers gained access to diverse applications through smartphones, creating a new mobile ecosystem that transcended the role of a simple telephone. This widespread adoption was underpinned by the growth of various hardware components—the proliferation of touchscreens and advancements in displays enabling diverse media consumption, alongside the development of mobile communication networks facilitating active data distribution. Currently, intense competition exists among numerous manufacturers. As of 2023, Samsung Electronics continues to lead the global smartphone market share at 19%, followed by Apple at 17%. China’s Huawei has seen its market share significantly decline due to U.S. sanctions. Instead, other Chinese companies—Xiaomi (12%), Oppo (10%), and Vivo (8%)—occupy the third to fifth positions. South Korea’s LG Electronics withdrew from the smartphone business in 2021, resulting in its market share disappearing.
While early smartphones focused intensely on boosting adoption rates through hardware price competitiveness due to their high cost, the current landscape sees phones with powerful hardware emerging as consumer demand for premium mobile devices grows. Smartphone hardware has become a key competitive factor, as evidenced by the prevalence of comparison comments in recent launch articles, such as “This phone has better RAM than the 〇〇〇 phone…” The rise in market capitalization of Qualcomm, one of the most successful companies in this hardware competition market, which manufactures and distributes smartphone CPUs, clearly demonstrates how much the hardware market has grown. Additionally, smartphone camera capabilities have emerged as a significant purchasing factor. Advances in camera technology have enabled smartphone users to easily capture high-quality photos and videos, which, coupled with the rise of social media, has become a powerful marketing point.
The smartphone operating system market is increasingly solidifying into a two-horse race between Android and iOS. As of 2024, Android holds approximately 71% market share, while iOS accounts for about 28%. Operating systems that once existed, such as Symbian OS, BlackBerry OS, Windows Phone, Samsung’s Bada, and Tizen, have essentially disappeared from the market or hold very negligible market shares. Consequently, competition in the operating system market is virtually nonexistent. The rivalry between these two systems extends beyond mere market share, intensifying fiercely in areas like user experience (UX) and ecosystem development. Android has expanded its market share by collaborating with diverse manufacturers through its open platform, while iOS has emphasized the integrated hardware and software experience to foster user loyalty. Consequently, consumers choose the operating system that best suits them, enjoying deeper experiences within each respective ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the application market continues to grow vigorously, with numerous apps released annually by both diverse companies and individual developers. Apps utilizing cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality are particularly gaining attention, and this trend continues to attract sustained interest from both consumers and manufacturers. One of the greatest advantages of smartphone usage is the opportunity to access diverse software. Services enabling users to easily download various applications and software—such as games, e-books, music, and videos—have flourished since Apple’s App Store launch, forming a massive market today. The growth of the mobile gaming market is particularly noteworthy. Many people enjoy their leisure time through smartphones, and mobile games are at the center of this. Consequently, game developers are releasing games optimized for the smartphone environment, generating continuous revenue. This massive market significantly impacts society, fostering the growth of youth ventures and small-to-medium enterprises. Examples include ‘Dragon Flight’ developed by NextFloor and SundayToz’s Anipang.
The smartphone’s inherent ability to host diverse content, coupled with increased data availability through mobile network advancements, has fueled growth across multiple media markets. Easy internet connectivity has also boosted social media activity, expanding into business ventures leveraging SNS. Smartphone-based SNS services, being easier and more convenient than PC-based alternatives, have seen particularly strong growth since smartphones became widespread. SNS has transcended being a simple communication platform to play a crucial role in information sharing, dissemination, and public opinion formation. For instance, Twitter serves as a powerful tool for real-time news delivery and public discourse, while Instagram has established itself as a leading platform for visual-centric communication and marketing. The most widely used SNS platforms include ‘Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Telegram, Zalo, and KakaoTalk’.
Smartphones have formed a symbiotic relationship with various businesses and individuals, including media companies, by providing and supplying media, thereby creating mutual benefits across diverse activities. Smartphone usage has brought numerous positive effects, such as enhancing work efficiency and significantly improving daily convenience through various applications. Furthermore, through multiple SNS platforms, it has diversified communication, enabling social interaction and the formation of new human relationships, playing a core role in the 21st-century information society. According to the 2022 Smartphone Usage Survey, 88.3% of smartphone users responded that “smartphone use has made life more convenient overall,” and 82.7% stated that “they learn about news or new information faster.” This continues to demonstrate the positive effects smartphones provide to individuals. Furthermore, smartphones also play a crucial role as tools for education and learning. Through various educational apps and online lectures, learning has become possible anytime, anywhere, contributing to expanding opportunities for lifelong education. Furthermore, the smartphone industry makes significant contributions to economic growth, exerting diverse economic impacts such as creating new jobs related to app development and invigorating e-commerce.
However, the proliferation of smartphones is not without its drawbacks. Alongside the rapid development of computers and high-speed communication networks, smartphone use has enabled access to desired content without constraints of time or space. This environment has been cited as a factor leading to smartphone addiction. Furthermore, smart devices like smartphones and tablet PCs are inherently portable, making them potentially more dangerous. Particularly as the age of users continues to decrease, dependent behavior toward mobile phones is increasing, heightening concerns about smartphone addiction. Smartphone addiction is recognized as a problem that goes beyond simple frequency of use and can have serious impacts on mental and physical health. Consequently, issues such as declining academic achievement, sleep disorders, and deteriorating eyesight among adolescents are emerging, prompting parents and educators to devote significant effort to addressing them. However, one study found that the primary reason children and adolescents enjoy smartphone games is to pass their leisure time. Based on this, the government is striving to prevent and treat smartphone addiction among children and adolescents by developing various programs that can be implemented at home or school. Research on other aspects of children’s behavior is also steadily progressing.
Another prominent issue with smartphones is personal information leakage. This problem has emerged as one of the challenges of the IT era. Amidst this, the rapid proliferation of smartphones has made security concerns related to using various internet services a top priority in smartphone usage. For example, various applications used on smartphones demand significant personal information from users, and the risk of this information being leaked through hacking or malicious code is ever-present. To reduce this risk, users must strengthen privacy settings and maintain security levels through regular updates. Companies are researching methods to limit information leaks, such as developing smartphone-specific antivirus software and utilizing security measures like fingerprint recognition and, further, iris recognition. Individuals are preventing information leaks by thoroughly deleting data according to manuals. Furthermore, while there have been no viruses or hacker groups directly targeting smartphones yet, security companies and researchers are conducting studies and experiments assuming such diverse scenarios. Beyond this, various negative impacts are emerging, such as the leakage of corporate confidential files, the spread of false information via SNS, violence stemming from easy internet access, and the proliferation of obscene videos. Smartphone developers, entertainment industry professionals, and security experts are not only pursuing strict penalties for these issues but also striving to find solutions.
Smartphones have already become an essential part of our lives, and their influence will continue to expand. The development and proliferation of smartphones have brought significant changes to the economy, culture, and social interactions, encompassing both positive and negative aspects. To effectively respond to these changes, it is crucial to leverage technological advancements while simultaneously developing strategies to minimize their negative impacts.
It is necessary to closely examine the future impact smartphones will have on our society and make policy efforts for a better future.
