Have smartphones really become as essential as food, clothing, and shelter?

In this blog post, we’ll examine how smartphones influence our lives and values in modern society through the lens of smartphone cases.

As social creatures, humans live by communicating with one another. Unless you’re a hermit living alone in the mountains, you contact others to make plans or ask questions to gather information. From ancient times to the present, communication between people has been a vital element of life, enabling us to live smoothly.
With the advancement of science and technology, the methods of communication have changed dramatically—from traditional means like letters and signal fires to today’s smartphones. Unlike the simple mobile phones of the past—so-called “feature phones”—smartphones are products of cutting-edge technology that offer not only voice calls but also internet access. They enable virtually everything from creating to storing and sharing information—including cameras, internet access, phone calls, Bluetooth, and the storage and viewing of various files and documents. Most people would agree on the value of smartphones equipped with such diverse functions. Therefore, just as we wear clothes to protect and adorn our bodies, many people purchase screen protectors, earphone accessories, and smartphone cases to protect and customize their smartphones.
When people hear the term “cell phone case,” they usually think of a smartphone case. This is because, before the advent of smartphones, cell phone cases were not as common as they are today. In fact, if you think back to your elementary school days when flip phones were widely used, cell phone cases were rarely seen. The same was true when slide phones and swing phones first appeared. Later, as technology enabling internet access was integrated into mobile phones, touchscreen phones were developed—devices operated by touching the screen with a finger, much like using a mouse on a computer, rather than by pressing physical keys. With the emergence of touchscreen phones like the Omnia and Haptic, demand arose to protect and customize the larger screens. As the risk of damage increased with the growing size of the displays, smartphone cases began to gain widespread popularity. As smartphones continued to evolve, the variety of cases expanded as well—ranging from practical cases with card slots to unique ones featuring vibrant colors and various characters. Today, smartphone cases have established themselves not merely as simple accessories but as everyday essentials and fashion items, to the extent that professional designers now create them. In this way, smartphone cases serve as an indicator of just how closely smartphones are intertwined with our lives, and they have become a quintessential must-have that modern people hold in their hands every single day.
Since this change is a result of smartphone advancements, it can be viewed as a positive aspect of scientific and technological progress. However, one might also wonder if the pace of change has been too rapid. As mentioned earlier when describing smartphones as treasured possessions, people cherish their devices, using cases with excellent protective features and switching between cases of various colors to match their mood or fashion sense. This goes beyond mere interest in the smartphone itself to include attention to its appearance. From this perspective, the constant emergence of more colorful and innovative cases around us is not only a positive outcome of technological and design advancements but also a sign that our focus is gradually shifting toward smartphones. In fact, there are cases where people order their own clothes online using their smartphones but visit physical stores to try on cases—the “clothes” for their smartphones—to ensure the color and design match well before making a purchase. When people value their smartphones as much as themselves and devote so much attention to protecting and accessorizing them, their interest in the attire of those around them may relatively diminish. While smartphones allow us to contact anyone we want, anytime and anywhere, becoming captivated by their outstanding features and immersing ourselves in accessorizing them brings the smartphone even closer to the center of our lives. Perhaps the phenomenon of smartphone cases becoming increasingly diverse and new products constantly being released hints at the growing individualism within our highly connected society.
What does the expression “clothes for a smartphone” mean? As mentioned earlier, smartphone cases are like our own clothes—only they’re for our smartphones. Most people own at least one smartphone, and it’s very common to use a case for each one. Drawing this analogy, the act of putting a case on a smartphone can feel a bit like caring for a child in the modern age of science and technology. Replacing a perfectly good smartphone case—one purchased not long ago—with a new one is similar to how, just as a child grows and wears new clothes, we provide our smartphones with new “clothes” that match their size and the latest trends as they evolve and are replaced by newer models. Just as parents buy their children trendy clothes and select higher-quality, attractive outfits for them, people also purchase multiple smartphone cases while using a single smartphone and switch them out depending on their mood or purpose. This behavior can be linked to the growing trend of individualism in modern society. Everyone has a smartphone by their side, and its mere presence can help alleviate loneliness or provide a sense of satisfaction. Could it be that smartphones have come to occupy a greater place in our lives than the desire to build a family and raise children with someone who truly understands us and is always by our side? It even leads me to the extreme thought that while we communicate with a broader society through smartphones, we may actually be moving toward a more individualistic way of life.
The 21st century is now evolving beyond the Information Age into an era of artificial intelligence and a hyper-connected society. Consequently, the essentials of human life are no longer limited to food, clothing, and shelter; it has reached a point where it would not be too far-fetched to describe them as “food, clothing, shelter, and a smartphone.” Furthermore, the “food, clothing, and shelter” of our smartphones have come to hold just as much significance as our own. Putting a case on our smartphones (clothing), charging their batteries and even carrying a power bank (food), and placing them in a safe spot—like next to the bed or by our pillow—so we can check them immediately upon waking up resembles providing “food, clothing, and shelter” for our smartphones.
As we spend more time pondering which smartphone case would be best, smartphones have established themselves as a central part of our lives. Consequently, there are other things that have gradually drifted from our focus. I’d like to conclude this article by suggesting that readers, rather than spending time comparing cases at smartphone stores, try spending time with family or friends—helping each other pick out clothes and sharing stories.
