How Did Sweet Desserts and Cafés Become Symbols of Healing?

In this blog post, we’ll explore how sweet desserts and cafés have established themselves as spaces for healing and comfort in the daily lives of modern people.

These days, it’s not hard to spot a café while walking through the city. In fact, it’s common to see several cafés lined up side by side on a single alley. Unique cafés are steadily popping up not only in Seoul’s Seongsu-dong, Yeonnam-dong, and Ikseon-dong but also in small towns across the country. While cafés used to be simply places to drink coffee, today they have evolved into multifaceted cultural spaces where people can explore their tastes, relax, and socialize.
In particular, modern people view cafes not merely as places to buy drinks, but as spaces to spend time on their own terms. Some read books in cafes, others open their laptops to work, and still others chat with friends or enjoy some quiet time alone. Cafes have become spaces where people can briefly escape their daily routines and catch their breath.
Along with the growth of café culture, the importance of desserts has also increased significantly. Whereas coffee used to be the star of the show in cafes, a variety of desserts—such as cakes, croissants, macarons, tarts, and shaved ice—have now become the key elements that attract customers. In fact, it’s now common to find specialty dessert cafes that focus more on desserts than on beverages.
There are several reasons for this growth in dessert culture. First, we can point to rising living standards and the spread of global food culture. As globalization has progressed, food cultures from around the world have been rapidly shared, and in Korea, it has become easy to enjoy a variety of desserts such as French macarons and éclairs, Japanese roll cakes, and Italian gelato. Desserts that could once only be tasted while traveling abroad are now sold even at neighborhood cafes.
The widespread use of social media and smartphones has also had a major impact on the spread of dessert culture. On platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, countless posts featuring cafes and desserts are shared every day. Cakes with eye-catching visuals and cafes with unique interiors quickly go viral through photos and videos, creating new trends. People visit cafes not just to enjoy delicious food, but also to document and share special experiences.
It is also worth noting that cafes have recently evolved into spaces for “taste-driven consumption.” Consumers aren’t just buying a cup of coffee; they’re choosing an atmosphere and values that align with their preferences. While some seek out cafes with eco-friendly interiors, others prefer a vintage aesthetic. Cafes are functioning as spaces where individuals can express their personal tastes and identities.
The stress experienced by modern people has also influenced the growth of café and dessert culture. Amid their busy daily lives, people seek ways to find satisfaction and relaxation in a short amount of time. Sweet desserts can temporarily lift one’s spirits and provide pleasure, while a cozy café space offers psychological comfort. Of course, excessive sugar intake can have negative health effects, but desserts enjoyed in moderation are seen by many as a small source of happiness.
This phenomenon is also linked to the recent consumer trend known as “Small Luxury.” As economic uncertainty grows, people are pursuing small pleasures in their daily lives rather than making large purchases. They visit atmospheric cafes instead of luxury hotels and enjoy delicious desserts instead of expensive luxury goods. Cafes have become a prime example of a space where people can find satisfaction and relaxation at a relatively low cost.
Sociologists sometimes describe cafes as a “Third Place” that exists between home and work. While people rest at home and work at the office, cafes exist in between, offering opportunities for casual socializing and relaxation. In fact, many people study, work, and meet new people at cafes.
Ultimately, the popularity of cafes isn’t solely due to coffee and desserts. Cafes are spaces where modern people can take a brief break from their busy lives, and places where they can discover and express their own tastes. They have also established themselves as important cultural spaces in modern society, offering small moments of happiness and comfort.
People’s visits to cafes for sweet desserts can ultimately be seen as a small effort toward a better life. Modern people take a moment to catch their breath while enjoying a cup of coffee and a dessert at a cafe, gaining the strength to return to their daily lives. In this sense, cafes go beyond being mere commercial spaces; they serve as psychological sanctuaries for those navigating modern society.
